India Unveiled

On the 15th of February 2022, the Indian state of Karnataka placed a hijab ban on college students- refusing them entry onto the institutions’ premises if they failed to comply. Whilst only being banned in the Southern state of Karnataka, such an act sparked debate regarding Hindu-Muslim relations within India given the central government’s backing of the initiative that holds support majorly from right wing Hindutva supporters. Questions arose as to the precedent being set by such blatant disregard for religious freedom and what that would mean for muslim minority rights across the nation whose political landscape seems to heighten tensions across the country.
